The new administrative capital, costing over $58 billion is located 45 km east of the current capital and is intended to relieve Cairo with its 22 million inhabitants. The uninhabited new city is still largely under construction and its pharaonic projects make economists think it is too big to build. Most of these investments, most of which are being made with public money, are a burden on the country's budget, placing the country in a very unstable economic situation.
